Lee Hartman was on Clifton beach when he noticed something missing: a cooler box worth bringing. Everything available was ugly, impractical, and built to be thrown away. He decided to build one worth keeping.

Together with designer Corban Warrington, Lee drew on Cape Town's history as a great trading post and the long tradition of safari camps, where equipment had to be beautiful, functional, and tough enough to survive anywhere. Fieldbar was born. Today Fieldbar is handcrafted in Cape Town and sold in more than 200 stores worldwide.

Every Fieldbar is made by hand in Cape Town. Not assembled: crafted. Each one passes through the hands of people who take pride in what they make, and who understand that a product built to last deserves the time it takes.

Every component considered

A Fieldbar is not assembled, it is built. Fifty-eight individual parts, each designed to be removed, repaired, or replaced. The outer shell is injection-moulded ABS plastic, formed under high pressure in custom steel moulds. The result is a cooler box with no weak points and no throwaway parts.

• The insulation uses zero ozone-depleting foam combined with reflective paint on the interior walls.
• A raised floor keeps contents clear of meltwater.
• An airtight solid ring gasket seals the lid.
• When packed with ice and kept in shade, a Fieldbar holds temperature for more than 50 hours.
• Outer shell is made from shock-absorbent ABS plastic, tough enough to survive a safari track, light enough to carry to the beach.
• Insulation uses zero ozone-depleting foam with a reflective interior.
• Lid seal: solid ring gasket, an airtight, condensation-free seal.
• Handle: genuine off-cut leather, gets softer with every carry.
• Hinges: commercial-grade aluminium, the same grade used in commercial refrigeration.
• Base: raised floor and non-slip silicone feet.
